8/25/2023 0 Comments Jam combo hi-fi rushWith the title having been released shortly after the Developer_Direct, there's no reason to wait any longer to play this innovative and exciting game.Having now completed the game’s core story mode on normal difficulty, played through the post game challenges to unlock the secret ending, then gone right back into replaying the levels to aim for a ranking of S on each stage in hard mode, I can say that my initial impression an hour into playing this game has held true. Hi-Fi Rush was a big surprise to viewers of the Xbox Developer_Direct, who can now enjoy the game on Xbox Game Pass. Hi-Fi Rush takes the art style and beat-driven gameplay of Jet Set Radio and the traversal of Sunset Overdrive and merges them wonderfully with the aggressive combo-building combat of Devil May Cry in a way that works perfectly. The game merges the themes of each of its influences flawlessly, encouraging players to take advantage of its battle and beats in a beautifully stylized world. Hi-Fi Rush takes that concept and runs with it, implementing the combo-driven gameplay satisfyingly and rewarding players with flashy finishes to their fights. DMC is all about catharsis in a way, allowing players to slay demons to their heart's content in whatever manner they choose. Sunset Overdrive had all the grinding and traversal tricks of Jet Set Radio, while also throwing superpowers and parkour into the mix.ĭevil May Cry's gameplay, on the other hand, is almost entirely different from Jet Set Radio and Sunset Overdrive, with the only real similarities being an epic heavy metal soundtrack and a combo-based combat system. Sunset Overdrive dropped in 2014 and featured its own brand of Jet Set Radio nostalgia, swapping out funky fresh beats for punk rock jams and an aesthetic to match, all while turning speed and movement up to ten. Hi-Fi Rush even features traversal sections and quick time events to really up the nostalgia, while simultaneously bringing it closer to the gameplay of Sunset Overdrive, another Jet Set Radio-inspired action adventure title focused on tunes and traversal. Hi-Fi Rush ticks all these boxes and more, dedicating itself entirely to beat-based combo combat while featuring modern cel-shaded animations and a soundtrack brimming with hard-hitting licensed rock tunes. With the popularity of Jet Set Radio, it's no wonder that it gets brought up every time a new game releases featuring beat-based gameplay, stylish cel shading, and a banger soundtrack. The Jet Set Radio franchise is known for its funky soundtrack, roller-skate-based traversal, and cel shading, which went on to shape and influence a whole generation of games. Hi-Fi Rush also features allies to spice up your combat, mini-games to mix things up, and mayhem galore, which all come together to keep things fresh over the course of the game. The more in-sync the combat and music are, the better Chai performs, giving him access to musical "Beat Hits" and combo finishers that provide that extra bit of flair to cap off combat. Chai's moves and attacks help create a "living soundtrack," and fighting in time with the music adds layers to both the soundtrack and Chai's combos. Chai's battling contributes to the soundtrack, with attacks automatically syncing up to the music, making for a casual experience at the start that only gets better the more in sync he becomes. The importance of music is reflected within the world as well, with everything in the game - from the environment to combat and even cutscenes syncing up to the beat like one big, violent interactive music video.Īs Chai, players jam their way through the different departments of the Vandelay corporation, beating their enemies to the beat of their own drum (or guitar). Hi-Fi Rush is all about the music, which is great considering that Chai is able to sense the rhythm of the entire world due to his new implant. Players take on the role of Chai, a wannabe rock star and recipient of a brand-new chest-mounted music player, a robotic arm, and a mission. Hi-Fi Rush mixes the musical elements and focus of Jet Set Radio and Sunset Overdrive with the beat 'em up gameplay of Devil May Cry.
